Math Daily Three

Math Daily Three

Background: Math Daily 3 is a mathematics framework that asks teachers to engage in three daily mathematics activities: Math With Someone, Math By Myself, and Writing About Math. This is a flexible model, allowing for activities to occur in a block or implemented within other curricular activities. As with the Daily Five , student choice and individualized learning is key to the model. There are over 300 books in the LevelUp library category of “Math and Measurement” that can be individually assigned, making LevelUp an ideal platform for supporting Math Daily Three.

Math With Someone
As a class, reading Counting Coins together, asking text-based questions as you go, and explicitly connecting the text to the illustrative photographs in the book.
Math By Myself

Create a digital playlist of activities that support coin identification and counting. For an in-person activity, consider giving students an option of “mystery piggy banks” which they empty, sort, and count.

Writing About Math

Many LevelUp books have questions built into the text that can be used as prompts for writing. In Counting Coins , consider these prompts on page 10 and 11 in response to the photographs: “Look at the coins. Which pile has the most coins? Which pile has the fewest?”

Considerations for Distance or Hybrid Environments:
Counting coins is a widely held math standard. There are multiple online games and learning platforms that support this skill, such as BrainPop, iReady and Splashmath, that can be offered on a “playlist” or choice board for students in a hybrid or distance learning model.
