Recording Yourself Reading a Book

Recording Yourself Reading a Book

Your teacher may assign you to record yourself reading a book aloud in order to check your reading skills. Almost every book in LevelUp has a built-in recording tool for just that purpose.

You can read the books aloud at your own pace, pause a recording and pick up where you left off, stop the recording to listen to your progress, and delete what you’ve recorded to start over. Once you’ve finished reading a book, your recording is sent directly to your teacher. (Note that a book’s pre-recorded audio is unavailable to play once you start recording the book yourself.)

To record yourself reading a book, click the record button (the small microphone) on the right-hand side of the toolbar below the book:

A window appears asking you to let LevelUp use your device’s microphone (this window may look different depending on your device and browser):

Click Allow.
If LevelUp cannot hear you, you will see a popup message after 10 seconds:

Click Try Again, adjust your microphone settings, and try to record again.

The recording tool opens where the microphone was:

If you change your mind or need more time to prepare, click the close button (the X in the circle) to the right of the recording tool.

Once you’re ready, click the record button and start reading the book aloud. The green dots on the tool move to show that your voice is being recorded:

Read the text as best as you can, clicking the next page button when you finish reading the current page. Take as much time as you need on each page, speaking loudly enough for your device’s microphone to record you clearly. Don’t worry if you make mistakes — everyone does. And the recording tool includes an option to start over if you’d like (see below).

If you want to take a break from the recording, click Pause. To start recording where you left off, just click Record again:

If you want to see how your recording sounds at any point, click Stop and then click Play. The audio you’ve recorded plays over your device’s speakers, and the Play button is now Pause:

If you aren’t happy with what you hear and want to start over, click Redo. A message asks if you want to erase the recording:

If you’re sure you want to re-record the book, click Yes. Otherwise, click No and return to your original recording to continue reading aloud.

Every time you click Pause or Stop, LevelUp saves your recording. That way, if you leave the book, you can always come back and finish your recording before submitting it to your teacher.

When you reach the end of the book and finish reading aloud, click Finish Book and Submit Recording:

A final window appears to confirm that you’ve finished the book and that the recording has been sent to your teacher, who will listen to it and schedule time to meet with you. You’ll also see that you’ve earned 10 extra game points for finishing and submitting your recording. Congratulations!

Click Continue to go to the book quiz as usual.

Once you have completed a recording, you can reopen that book and listen to the recording again by clicking the microphone icon and then clicking the Play button. You can also make a new recording in the same book by clicking the Redo button.
